Some of our clients have too many shrubs and trees close to the home or building foundation. The problem is the tree roots and shrubs will withdraw large amounts of water from the expansive soils during hot, dry weather. When these expansive soils lose too much water they will shrink significantly and lose contact with the bottom of the foundation. Now the foundation has lost its support and the weight of the building and foundation will cause it to “fall down” to meet the support of the soil. This creates foundation cracks and damage. The solutions include removal of trees and shrubs, replanting shrubs farther from the building, and / or tree root barricades.
