Texas Drought Warning

Drought conditions can threaten a home’s foundation by causing soil to shrink beyond the tolerances it was designed for. For more information about how to limit the damage low rainfall can cause to your home’s foundation, check out our free tips. If you suspect your foundation is in need of repair, contact us for a free inspection today!

Due to extreme drought, there is currently a burn ban in effect in Austin, Chambers, San Jacinto, and Waller counties. For local news stories about the drought, click here.

Houston Soil Conditions

Houston, along with Corpus Christi, Dallas, and Fort Worth is one of the cities with the highest demand for foundation repair in Texas. Houston’s soil varies depending on location, but it is universally fine with little to no rocky deposits. Houston has areas of silt, sand, clay, and loam. In general, the closer to the coast an area is, the more expansive the soil becomes. Some areas in far north Houston are actually quite stable, but as one moves south the soil plasticity index (a rating which designates how much soil shrinks or swells with changes in moisture) increases to extreme levels.

If you would like to take a detailed look at the soil in your neighbourhood, consider looking at the United States Department of Agriculture’s Soil Survey Tool. It can give you an in-depth look at exactly what type of soil your home sits on and the characteristics one can expect from soils of that type.

For your convenience, we have compiled a tutorial on how to use the Soil Survey Tool which you can read by clicking here.
